The masthead of this magazine cover is ‘Kerrang’. It has a very large font and bold use of colour (black) with a white background which helps it to stand out. The masthead also has special effects coming out of the word which looks as if the letters are shatter glass. This makes the magazine stand out; however part of the masthead is place behind the main image which is common for most magazines. This unfortunately shows s certain lack of originality. Because of these feature the Kerrang logo is easily recognisable and has been used in every magazine since it was created this shows that if you have a strong logo people will remember it and there will be no need to change it.
The main image used in the magazine is a mid-long shot of the lead singers from various different bands like green day, slipknot, linkin park, metallica etc. The image takes up about 50% of the background but allows enough space for all the text and teasers. The image itself is pretty well done, using members from various different bands well is easily help to catch the readers the attention and also complements their target audience since Kerrang try to attract various types’ rock music listeners and having several different band member really helps that. However there are no special type of effects which can make the image seem out of place and rather bland when contrasting with the text and other things.
The other images used on this front cover are just photos of other bands. These images are simply there to further add who this magazines target audience is and to fill in any of the empty space on the front cover. They’re also used to help promote and sell the magazine since it helps to show a larger variety of music that this magazine covers.
Specifically, only one button is featured and is used to signify that 5 posters are available when you purchase the magazine. The button is pretty much their and doesn’t really have any relevance besides showing the posters available plus the colour scheme of the buttons is pretty bland.
The colour scheme of this magazine mainly consists of blue black and white. The blue is mainly used to cover an image and make it stand out, the black is only used in the masthead and one of the sub headings and the white is used for the majority of the text. What this does is that it makes the text stand out a lot from the background and even the images which is great for showing off the teaser and features that are inside the magazine, but because of this the magazine can lot rather bland at time as your attention is somewhat drawn away from the image which is the main selling point for this magazine.
The front page of the magazine is pretty self explanatory since quite a bit of the information (teasers) about what’s inside the magazine is feature on the front page and the colour scheme and font make them easy to read and understand. 65% of the magazine is made up of these features which mean that the main goal of the magazine is to telling you what’s inside the magazine without giving everything away and there leaving some room for the main image. All of these teaser help to attract their audience and the people buying it will known what to expect from the magazine and if there is a lot of content available on simply the front cover, then they can expect a lot more inside.
The main selling point of this magazine is arguably the main image used or the headings. The main image shows a wide variety of artist from several bands which makes the magazine look a lot more varied and original plus a lot of artist may improve the quality of the magazine. The text is also a large selling point since it sticks out greatly and the magazine features a large amount of teaser which shows the reader what they should expect from the magazine.
